Orange Pear Apple Bear by Emily Gravett
Peggy Rollins, children’s librarian at the Davis Branch of Yolo County Library, says today’s children’s picture books are works of art. “They lead readers to captivating and whimsical destinations. Imagination flows from the pages, encouraging readers to join in the characters’ lives.” She believes that sharing books with children lets her see adventures through younger eyes and feel renewed. Her recommendations showcase excellent illustrations that inspire creativity.

Ages 1-4
Rollins chose Orange Pear Apple Bear (Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, $12.99) by Emily Gravett because it tells a real story with humor. “This book explores concepts of color, rhyme, rhythm and punctuation while a bear juggles and plays.”

Ages 4-8
Rollins says Look-Alikes Around the World (Little Brown Young Readers, $15.99) by Joan Steiner uses everyday objects in ingenious ways. “Steiner created three-dimensional scenes of famous landmarks and vacation locales from the Egyptian pyramids to the Taj Mahal. This unique postcard album will captivate puzzlers of all ages.”

Ages 10-16
Steven Caney’s Ultimate Building Book (Running Press Kids, $29.95) is the definitive volume detailing construction in all its fascinating forms,” says Rollins. “Packed with building projects guaranteed to engage all ages, this book gives easy-to-follow instructions for creating amazing models and toys.”
