Pacific Gas & Electric Company: Leading by example
Named Environmental Business of the Year by the Planning and Conservation League Statewide Environmental Alliance, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is leading its customers by example in the fight against global warming. As an electricity and natural gas provider to nearly 40 percent of Californians and one in 20 Americans, they have made a commitment to not only meet environmental regulations, but to exceed them. To help meet their goals, PG&E has created educational and incentive programs aimed at helping their customers lessen their household energy use.
The SmartEnergy Analyzer is an online tool that helps homeowners evaluate their current power usage, and offers simple ways to become more energy efficient.
Energy Efficiency Offerings provide rebates of $35-$75 to customers who upgrade to energy-efficient appliances.
California Solar Initiative is a $2.1-billion program that offers financial initiatives for installing solar power on existing homes.
ClimateSmart helps customers reduce their personal carbon footprint. Customers voluntarily pay a separate amount on their monthly bill to remove or avoid the equivalent carbon dioxide associated with their energy use. PG&E determines the amount by calculating how many pounds of greenhouse gas emissions the customer’s electricity and natural gas usage produces. On average, the amount is less than $5. The money goes directly to help fund environmental projects aimed at removing greenhouse gases.
