Credentials across the board

A physician who has graduated from medical school, completed a residency, trained under supervision in a specialty and is eligible to take a qualifying exam given by a medical specialty board is referred to as board-eligible.

A board-certified physician is one who has met all the educational requirements and passed a qualifying exam given by a medical specialty board.

There are currently 24 approved medical specialty boards in the United States. A few-the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, for one-require a physician have a certain number of years of clinical experience before he or she is eligible to take the final qualifying exam.
