Road Biking Eureka + Six Rivers

Located in the heart of Redwood Country, Eureka is located at the intersection of Highways 101 and 299 (which leads to Redding, Calif.). Smith River NRA is farther north towards Crescent City. Head north on Highway 101 to Highway 199 east.

Road biking in Eureka is easy and pleasurable, allowing you to take extra time to enjoy the town’s Victorian charm. Eureka’s history comes from its foundling industries: fish, lumber and gold, which made the frontier town the “Beverly Hills” of its day.

Don’t miss these attractions in town:
• Carson Mansion, built in 1885 by lumber entrepreneur William Carson.
• Eureka’s excellent seafood.
• Eureka Boardwalk with boats hauling in their catches, the birds, harbor seals and other wildlife.
• Morris Graves Museum of Art.
• Redwood Coast Jazz Festival (3 days, typically in March)

Just outside of town, enjoy:

Hiking amidst glorious redwoods on any of the many available trails: Little Bald Hills in Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park, Elk Camp Ridge (moderate difficulty) which was the original pack trail between Crescent City and Oregon’s Illinois Valley. If heading out the Elk Camp Ridge Trail bring your fishing gear for steelhead and salmon.

For those looking for a unique camping experience:
Six Rivers National Forest has four campsites, but of extraordinary notice is Bear Basin Butte Lookout, an old fire lookout with 1930s-style cabin perched high on the mountainside. While there are beds and rudimentary furniture, you still need to bring camping equipment, but the accommodations are unique and provide access to awesome scenery and a one-of-a-kind experience. Sleeps up to 8 people.
